Moses bonds with Pharaoh's daughter Ramses who is betrothed to her brother Rameses. Moses later kills an Egyptian taskmaster and hinders what he believes is a murder attempt on Ramses. This results in Moses being banished from the palace and Ramses being crowned king. Years later, Moses returns to Egypt as a grown man and opens a blacksmith's shop. He falls in love with Nefretiri, who is also a blacksmith's daughter. Rameses soon arrives to wed Nefretiri as part of a peace treaty with the Greeks. Moses then confronts Ramses for his father's murder as well as their mutual hatred of Moses for being exiled from the palace. After Ramses refuses to help him, he exposes him as an impostor and flees with Nefretiri and her father aboard his ship. Rameses and the royal guard chase the ship down and a fight ensues below deck. Moses kills Ramses before being mortally wounded by Ramses' archer. Before dying, he tells Nefretiri of a vision he has had of a new king, who will lead the Hebrews to freedom. The film's sets were designed by art director Cedric Gibbons. Despite being made in 1923, this was only released in the United States three years later because of copyright issues with Cecil B. DeMille's 1924 epic "The Ten Commandments". What also makes this version of "the story of Moses" unique is that it was directed by a woman - Lois Weber. Weber also played a large role in the film's production alongside her husband Phillips Smalley. The film is broken up into three acts which are book-ended by animated sequences drawn by Weber herself. Some of the special effects in this film were created by husband and wife team, Max and Dave Fleischer who had created the "Koko the Clown" series before they started experimenting with animation. For this particular sequence, both Jack Cutting and Max Fleischer did some of the animation, while Lois Weber supervised the cutting of their work. Weber would later go on to create some groundbreaking experimental animated films while working with her husband that would pave the way for future animators including Walter Lantz, Frank Capra, Walt Disney and even Ralph Bakshi. cfa1e77820
