Bolt is a 2008 American computer animated film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 48th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. The movie tells the story of Bolt, a white dog who believes himself to be an above-average Hollywood super dog, when in reality he's just an average canine star. The movie was well received among critics and audiences alike, with many praising it for its humor and emotional story. The title character's personality has been compared to that of Andy from Toy Story—a toy who mistakenly believes himself to be real—and similar comparisons have been drawn between other characters such as Penny and Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. The film has also been credited with improving the reputation of CGI in general. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards and won one, Best Animated Feature. In addition, it was nominated for three Annie Awards, winning two. The last of the original members of the Production Team to win an Annie Award was Michael Giaimo who won a technical achievement award for his work on "Bolt". "Bolt" tells the story of Bolt, a young black Labradoodle mixed breed dog living with his owner, Penny. Bolt becomes a star of a series of television commercials for a "Stevens Super Dog" protein breakfast cereal, and is even featured by the media at the Westminster Dog Show. Bolt works diligently on his acting career and gets invited to visit Disney World. While on vacation Bolt has the opportunity to visit the Hollywood Walk of Fame where he meets two other dogs who are Oscar De La Hoya's canine co-stars in his latest film, "The Champ". Upon returning home Bolt is devastated to learn that he isn't an Oscar De La Hoya super dog but rather just an average dog actor. Feeling rejected, Bolt decides to run away from Penny, only to be captured by agent Rick Sterling. Upon freeing Bolt, he is convinced by Penny to return home to her. Together, they join forces with unscrupulous "film financier" Francis E. Francis in order to rescue Penny from the clutches of the villainous Dr. Calico, who wants to take over the world with his mind-controlling collar that he plans to attach onto Penny. At the climax of the film's struggle between good and evil Bolt discovers that his super powers are real after all and uses them along with his friends' help against Calico, enabling them to defeat him. Calico is arrested and his collar falls into the hands of a giant chicken named Tulip who intends on using it for her own evil plans. The film ends with Bolt and Penny happily reuniting with Francis and the other cast members of his soon-to-be failed movie.The film, unlike "Toy Story", was originally going to be released as a traditional hand-drawn animation film rather than as a computer animated feature. In an interview with "Premiere" magazine, director Chris Sanders said that Disney has been working on computer animation technology for some time, but they have been reluctant to use it because of their history of using hand-drawn animation. This new development in computer animation technology would make a more traditional hand-drawn animated feature easier to produce.
